European Culture Discussion

I have noticed a lot of the same things in terms of culture between both Italy and France so far. Standard meals are a bit more varied instead of menus focusing mostly on pasta and pizza in France, but otherwise I have noticed a lot of similarities. There are a lot more small, street vendors and shops, smaller cars for smaller roads, and larger distances between the widespread companies. One other notable difference between Turin, Italy and Lyon, France is that Lyon doesn't usually fix damage from big events. When the city was invaded, the invaders knocked heads off statues and sculptures. When the city was recovered, the citizens chose to not fix the sculptures to preserve the history of the event. Another example of this was in Paris and the Notre Dame burning down. Most everyone who were drawing up plans for the new roof wanted to do something new for the roof instead of a replica of the old one.

  1. I also thought it was cool that Lyon doesn’t fix damage from historical events. This is an interesting difference in the countries, since leaving damage to a monument of some kind might be frowned upon in some places, as they want their area to look as nice and presentable as possible, while Lyon thinks the history is just as important as the presentation,

  2. I think it is so interesting to learn about how Lyon didn't fix or redo damages that were caused by some event in history. I think it's very nice how they acknowledged how it's not what it was originally but decided to leave history in the past and just move on. They don't want to dwell on what it once was and instead, they decide to accept what has happened and to move on with life, they would rather change it into something else entirely.

  3. I also found it interesting that Lyon doesn’t fix their monuments in order to preserve their history. It’s an interesting concept when you consider how other places try to restore historical artifacts and buildings to its original state. Like I’m the automobile museum in Turin, where they wanted to restore the original steam powered carriage to its original color. However France considers it more authentic and true to history not to restore what was destroyed.
